Why I'm Running

Kirk Taylor — Candidate for Costilla County Sheriff

Restoring Trust, Supporting Deputies, Serving the People

I'm running for Costilla County Sheriff to restore trust, support our deputies, and ensure that the sheriff's office serves the people — not politics. This campaign is focused on professionalism, transparency, honesty, and community engagement.

I decided to run after friends and neighbors encouraged me to step up. They were concerned about rising crime, long response times, and a lack of visible leadership. Costilla County is large and rural, and it needs a Sheriff who understands those realities and is willing to be present, accessible, and engaged.

At its core, most of us want the same things:

  • To feel safe in our homes and on our property
  • To know help is on the way when we need it
  • To have deputies who are supported, well-trained, and focused on prevention
  • To be treated fairly and respectfully

I believe we can achieve this through smart leadership, common sense, and community trust.

Get to Know Kirk

Kirk Taylor with family outdoors in Colorado

Hi, I'm Kirk Taylor, and I'm running for Sheriff of Costilla County because I care deeply about this community and the people who call it home.

I never set out to be a politician. Like many people here, I've spent my life working hard, raising a family, and solving real problems. For most of my career, I've worked in leadership roles in technology and operations — managing teams, budgets, and complex situations where clear thinking and accountability matter. Those skills translate directly to leading a Sheriff's Office that operates effectively and earns public trust.

Training and Perspective

I have many years of experience training in Krav Maga, a practical self-defense system focused on awareness, de-escalation, and control. That training has shaped my perspective on safety — stay calm under pressure, avoid unnecessary conflict, and use force only when absolutely necessary.

Family and Commitment

I'm married, the father of three daughters, and a proud grandfather to six grandchildren. Family is everything to me, and that's exactly why this matters. I want Costilla County to be a place where families feel safe, neighbors look out for one another, and kids can grow up without fear.

Running for Sheriff means real sacrifice, including stepping away from a higher-paying career. I'm doing it because I believe this community is worth it. If elected, I promise to serve Costilla County with honesty, respect, and a steady hand.

My Experience

Leadership & Organizational Management

For decades, I've worked in senior leadership roles overseeing teams, operations, and budgets in complex environments where accountability and reliability matter.

  • Managing personnel, schedules, and resources
  • Overseeing budgets responsibly and transparently
  • Establishing clear policies and expectations
  • Making calm, informed decisions under pressure

Use-of-Force Judgment & Training

I have many years of experience training in Krav Maga, working with civilians, women, children, military personnel, law enforcement officers, and executive protection professionals.

  • Situational awareness and early threat recognition
  • De-escalation whenever possible
  • Controlled, proportional responses
  • Lawful and responsible decision-making

Transparency, Honesty & Fairness

I believe leadership demands honesty, transparency, and fairness, especially when decisions are difficult or unpopular. As Sheriff, that means:

  • Clear policies applied consistently
  • Open communication with the public
  • Accountability within the department, including leadership
  • Equal enforcement of the law without favoritism or politics

Operational Thinking & Accountability

I rely on data, clear processes, and accountability to guide decisions — not assumptions or politics. In practice, this means:

  • Understanding where crime is occurring and why
  • Deploying resources strategically, especially in rural areas
  • Measuring outcomes and adjusting tactics when needed
  • Focusing on prevention, not just reaction

What I Stand For

Public Safety

Feeling safe in your home and on your property is a right, not a privilege. I will prioritize response times and visible, proactive policing across the county.

Community Trust

The sheriff's office should serve the people — not politics. I will lead with transparency, accessibility, and a commitment to earning trust every day.

Accountability

Clear policies applied consistently. Open communication. Equal enforcement of the law without favoritism. Public trust is earned through actions, not words.

Supporting Deputies

Deputies deserve strong leadership that supports them with training, resources, and clear expectations. I will build a department grounded in professionalism and morale.

Transparency

Honesty, transparency, and fairness — especially when decisions are difficult or unpopular. The public deserves a sheriff they can see, hear, and hold accountable.

Prevention First

Smart policing means understanding where crime is occurring and why, deploying resources strategically, and focusing on prevention — not just reaction.
